Our Expertise in Dementia Care

Expertise rooted in empathy, proven in practice

At Shedfield Lodge, dementia care is not simply what we do — it’s who we are. Our philosophy of ‘Caring Through Understanding’ shapes every moment, from the way we train our team to the environments we create. With specialist knowledge, compassion, and a deep respect for individuality, we provide care that goes beyond meeting needs — it nurtures identity, dignity, and purpose. This is what makes us true dementia specialists.

Person-Centred Care

We recognise that no two people experience dementia in the same way. Every care plan at Shedfield Lodge is built around the individual — their life story, preferences, routines and aspirations. By valuing what makes each person unique, we create daily experiences that feel familiar, comforting and meaningful.

Understanding the Dementia Journey

Living with dementia changes how the world is seen and felt. Our team are trained to view every moment through the eyes of the person experiencing dementia. This insight allows us to respond with patience, dignity and empathy, reducing distress and promoting calm, positive interactions.

Highly Trained Team

Expertise begins with people. Every member of our team receives specialist dementia training and ongoing professional development. Just as importantly, we recruit for kindness, compassion and emotional intelligence — qualities that are essential in delivering genuine, heartfelt care.

Community Engagement

Dementia awareness should extend beyond our home. That’s why we partner with local schools, businesses and groups to create a community that understands and supports those living with dementia. Together, we’re building a network of inclusion, awareness and care.

Dr Kellyn Lee BSc(Hons) MRes, PhD and CPsychol

Dr Kellyn Lee is an expert trainer in Material Citizenship and has over 30 years’ experience in health and social care. She studied psychology at the University of Portsmouth and gained her PhD at the University of Southampton, and is a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor. She is the founder of the charity The Dementia Care Hub and WISER Health and Social Care Ltd trading as Dr Kellyn, providing education, coaching and consultancy, transforming dementia care for those working professionally or experiencing dementia personally.

The Material Citizenship model of relational care is a psychosocial training programme for anyone working with people living with dementia. It follows the 5 relational care principles:

  • Physical Environment:

The physical space has a person’s objects to support individual autonomy and provides opportunities for interaction and connection.

  • Sense of Belonging:

Objects enable a person to feel connected to the home by acting in a way that makes sense, for example, doing the hoovering each Wednesday. Keeping them connected with routine and rituals that make sense, in turn reducing or removing distress reactions.

  • Connection to Others:

Establishing and maintaining relationships by demonstrating identity via their belongings.

  • Meaningful Role:

Having a sense of purpose and contribution by using objects to build reciprocal relationships with others that provide enhanced levels of wellbeing and reduce ill-being.

  • Connection to Place :

Feeling connected to one's home through access to personal possessions.

If you are looking after a loved one with dementia, the Dr Kellyn Lee's "We Care Dementia Care" programme can help you adjust to the change dementia inevitably brings. You can find more details about this on Dr Kellyn's website, where you will also discover how Dr Kellyn’s Material Citizenship programme changes the way professional carers think about dementia care.
