Dementia Awareness At Shedfield Lodge

Aroma Memories, Shedfield Lodge, Dementia Awareness

After the success of our dementia workshop for DAW2017, our local Parish Magazine have published an article about it in their latest issue (July/August) of Parish Magazine for Shedfield, Shirrell Heath & Bishops Waltham.

You will soon be able to download a copy direct from their website:

In the meantime, here is what they had to say about us:

"There are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2025. On Monday, 14th May, as part of Dementia Awareness week, Shedfield Lodge Residential Care Home held a pop-in day at Shedfield Reading Room to aid the understanding of this debilitating condition. Tea, coffee and cakes were provided and several staff members were on hand to help visitors understand the complexities of dementia and how it affects not only those with dementia, but the family and friends who support them. Dementia describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function. These conditions are all usually progressive and eventually severe. Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia, affecting 62 per cent of those diagnosed. The pop-in day included an emotive video showing real families and friends as they cope and support on a daily basis and an informative presentation, finishing with a quiz - which I failed miserably! It was explained how organisations like Shedfield Lodge help sufferers (We prefer to say 'those living with dementia ~ Shedfield Lodge) unlock memories by using hands-on activities. Some of these were available to try out. For instance, visitors were encouraged to sample more than half a dozen bottled fragrances. Forget perfumes. Think disinfectant or camphorated oil, as well as sweeter aromas. There were 'feeling bags' full of mysterious items ready for sightless touching, for instance marbles in one bag and wool in another. There were also examples of how art can be used as a stimulant as well as the part music can play in unlocking hazy or near-lost memories. The Alzheimer's Society is committed to spending £150 million over the next decade on dementia research to improve care for people today and find a cure for tomorrow. This includes £50 million to develop the UK's first dedicated Dementia Research Institute. It is hoped that Shedfield Lodge will run the pop-in again during next year's Dementia Awareness Week, so please watch out for this and come along and find out more."

In response to this, we would like to say that we will be holding more workshops in the future. The feedback that we have received from those that attended has been very positive and we are very keen for our community to be included in our future plans. We would also like to thank the Parish Magazine for reporting our activities and spreading the word about Dementia.
